Inventory Management Problem (how many orders a year)
This problem comes up in most Business Calculus classes, but not many regular Calculus 1 classes. The formula is
C(x) = Q /(2x) * (storage cost per unit per year) + (cost or placing an order)*x
C(x) is the cost of order-placement and storage.
Q is the total quantity to be bought throughout the year.
x is the number of orders.
The two in Q/(2x) is to get the average quantity stored. If you order 400 TVs, and then reorder when you have 0 TVs, on average you were storing 200 TVs over that period.
